Meet the new coaches

A new prep football season always means new players.

And this year we have quite a few new coaches. Six to be exact.

Here’s a look at the new coaches taking over local programs.

Michael Campbell, Adelanto

Adelanto head coach Michael Campbell

Previous Experience: Campbell was an assistant coach with Adelanto last season and has had stints with Victor Valley, Silverado and Victor Valley College in the past.

Replacing: Jayson Hughes

Notable: Played college football with Utah State and played high school ball at Pomona.

Mike Dickinson, ACE

Academy of Careers and Exploration head coach Mike Dickinson

Previous Experience: Was an assistant coach at Excelsior before taking the head coaching gig at ACE.

Replacing: None, first year of program’s existence

Notable: Coached at Excelsior when the Eagles played 8-man football and is excited to get back to the 8-man game.

Dean Dorsey, Hesperia Christian

Hesperia Christian coach Dean Dorsey

Previous Experience: Dorsey was the Patriots head coach for six years ending after the 2011 season.

Replacing: Chris Leontas

Noteable: Coached flag football at the Hesperia Christian Junior High the last two years.

Alex Gonzalez, Granite Hills

Granite Hills head coach Alex Gonzalez

Previous Experience: Gonzalez was an assistant coach at El Rancho the last two seasons and an assistant for the Cougars four season before that.

Replacing: Damian Staricka

Noteable: Graduated from Granite Hills in 2006. Joel Hurtt, the coach at Granite Hills during Gonzalez’s senior season, is an assistant on the varsity staff.

Keith Locklear, Sultana

Sultana head coach Keith Locklear

Previous Experience: Locklear guided the high-flying Oak Hills offense last season.

Replacing: David Booth Jr.

Noteable: Locklear, a Hesperia grad, has now coached at all three high schools in the Hesperia Unified School District.

Matt Rohrbaugh, Apple Valley

Apple Valley head coach Matt Rohrbaugh

Previous Experience: The Sun Devils’ longtime defensive coordinator has been an assistant coach with the Sun Devils for 14 years.

Replacing: Frank Pulice

Noteable: Graduated from Apple Valley in 1995, when outgoing coach Frank Pulice was an assistant on the football team.
