The Bitcoin Halving Epoch
A concept note for a roundtable discussion on the upcoming Bitcoin Halving event in May 2020
Bitcoin’s 3rd halving is just around the corner. The first halving event occurred on the 29th of November, 2012 at block height 210,000. The second halving event occurred on the 10th of July, 2016 at block height 420,000.
It is always a heavy-duty debate on what Bitcoin will do in terms of pricing or performance pre and post a halving event. Some points which come to mind are:
- Is it right to believe that the halving is already priced in by the market and thus there’s no expectation for the price to do anything?
- Or is it that due to price equilibrium, a halving of supply should cause an increase in price if the demand for Bitcoins is equal or greater than what it was before the halving event?
- Is bitcoin still a safe haven considering the recent ‘uncorrelated’ crash on Black Thursday?
- How will mining as an industry get affected by this Halving?
- Will this halving bring bitcoin into further prominence or would we see the urge to own a bitcoin slow down due to high prices?
For this discussion, we got some of the best minds to brainstorm the epoch changes in the Bitcoin supply. This particular roundtable discussion will either answer the questions above or open another pandora’s box of puzzles. Either way, the people involved made this discussion worth the while.

He was an early adopter of open source technology as a Director at LinuxIT a Redhat and SUSE premier reseller partner providing consultancy to Public and Private sectors on open source adoption back in 2011. He bought his first Bitcoin in 2013 and is a strong believer in business alignment and the need for financial and technological reform. He is a Forbes quoted evangelist on the Blockchain and cryptocurrency movement.
Sathvik Vishwanath is a successful entrepreneur whose heart and soul are into innovative and disruptive technologies.
His business journey started with VentureNext in 2008 writing customized scripts for businesses in a virtual world called SecondLife.
Currently, he leads India’s first and one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges called Unocoin.
Marco is the CEO & Co-Founder of Genesis Group and Genesis Mining. Studied physics, mathematics, economics. Ph.D. in theoretical physics. He has held previous senior structuring quant roles at UniCredit Bank.
