Graffity is an Augmented Reality(AR) Video Chat app used by teenagers from over 50+ countries. Users can invite friends to the AR Space and doodle in each other’s atmosphere. In this article, I would like to share all the cool prototypes we made!

Background

Graffity is an ambitious startup based in Tokyo seeking to launch a product in the US to reach the global audience. Therefore in 2018 May, my team flew to L.A. and did user research for 2 months. ✈️

First, let’s research…

We did over 30+ user interviews on UCLA and USC campus to learn about teenagers' life and their problem surrounding communication.

Through several interviews and from shadowing 5 students throughout the day, we found out that many students video chats with their friends and families living far away.

Now let’s prototype!

Then we created several prototypes evolving video chat.

Your friend’s face shows up in your world while chatting!
Pick your AVATAR and talk with your AVATAR friend!
Crop funny cute things in front of you and send it to your friend's view!

Time to ship the product!

After creating prototypes for each of then we conducted 5 focus groups to see users' reactions and used Insta Story Ads to see users' initial reactions towards the product. Long story short, they all loved the filters! The drawing the line feature is available now on the app store, and the other filters should soon be available!

Side story, how I picked the key color of the app

We wanted to create an App that truly fits the local culture. Throughout my stay in LA, I took many snaps. I noticed the vibrant sunset, the color gradation from pink to blue. I also noticed people’s love for pink.

Sky blue went along with our free spirit concept and pink added a perfect accent to stand out in the App Store.

Yey! Here are some of the achievements!
