There a ton of great newsletter services available today that make creating and maintaining your own newsletter easy. But with so many choices how do you decide which is right for you?

Type of Newsletter

What type of newsletter you intend to create can help determine which service best serves your needs. Is it for your business? Does it need a unique design and layout? Is it for your personal brand?

Personal

Personal newsletters written by a single person to their audience is a growing trend and there are many free options available. For a personal letter branding and design is less important, a simple and clean newsletter can get the job done.

TinyLetter by Mailchimp

This is a great option if all you need is the ability to collect emails and send a simple clean newsletter with as little effort as possible. You get access to a simple editor to write your emails and you can even send directly from your own email client.

Revue

Revue is an excellent option if your newsletter focuses on sharing interesting content you created yourself or discovered online. It offers several integrations to easily add content from your accounts on Medium, Twitter, Pocket and more. There isn’t much room for customisation but the default design is nice enough to make a newsletter you’ll be proud of.

Business

For your business, you’ll probably need a lot more features. Custom landing pages, segments and the ability to tweak every pixel of your design.

MailChimp

Need to customise every inch of your newsletter? Divide your subscribers into segments? Get detailed reports of your newsletter performance? MailChimp has every feature you could want and more. It also offers up to 2000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month for FREE. It’s the most comprehensive option available.

Benchmark Email

Benchmark has a beautiful drag and drop editor and even lets you edit the HTML to create whatever your imagination. The free plan is slightly better than MailChimp’s with 2000 subscribers and 14,000 emails per month. It also has features for automation, surveys and detailed reports of your emails.

Choose Wisely

There are many more options available but it’s important to look at your particular use case and how easy that service will make it. The most powerful option might just hinder your work and the simplest might constrain you. Each service has its pros and cons that you should weigh against your particular needs.
