Aspiring entrepreneurs often hear about great books on the topic — sometimes we even read them! — but knowledge without action won’t get you far.

Time for some action! This series zooms in on one tip, quote or anecdote the IncBuilders team has gleaned from their favorite books on entrepreneurship. These are things you can apply now to accelerate your startup journey.

Note: Acting on these tips will probably make you wildly successful — use with caution!

Today’s action tip is brought to you from Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

Of Hill’s 13 principles of true success let's focus on the first — the cornerstone of all achievement …

Desire.

Collins Online Dictionary defines “desire” as “a strong wish to do or have something.”

What is it that you really want? Really, really want? Because you need to identify that core desire to define your purpose and articulate it to others.

Be clear on what you want — crystal clear. The most successful people have achieved this level of clarity, and it’s hard to make much progress without it.

Turning desire into action

Fix that desire in your mind by setting a concrete, exact, detailed goal. Take a nice piece of paper and — here comes the kicker — write it down.

Now place it where you'll see it every day — this simple step is the only homework this exercise requires. It's a small step, yet you are about to do a whole lot with it.

Once you’ve established a burning desire backed by a definite purpose, you are on your way to greatness.

Congratulations on taking your first step!
