Joining OP Crypto: Darrell Tu
I’m beyond pleased to announce that I’ll be joining OP Crypto this year as a Marketing Associate.
I’ll be bringing my capabilities as a social media manager and communications specialist to bolster in-house marketing initiatives and promote OP as the premium, crypto-native brand I know it to be. We’ll be hosting and participating at a bunch of global Web3 events this year, so I’m also excited to help OP Crypto make a splash during upcoming offline meetups.
Joining OP Crypto full-time was a straightforward decision for me. Breaking into the Web3 space (let alone the VC industry) as a South African citizen was a challenging ambition. I’d met David at a Web3 meetup hosted by OP Crypto in Cape Town, after which he encouraged me to look into the internship opportunities at OP without hesitation. I was brought on board as a remote intern in May 2022, and was immediately struck by their ability to maintain operational efficiency and effective communication, even with team members dispersed widely across the globe. Since then, the firm has provided me with experiences that were previously unimaginable. They’ve enabled me to pursue my passion for decentralized technologies as a career, and meet the brightest minds in the industry.
After months of online correspondence, I was finally able to join the team IRL in November at the Alpha House in New York for the OP team building meetup — nothing short of an incredible experience. I remember being met with a warm and spirited welcome from David, Calvin and Lucas, who immediately put their heads down and got back to work right after. I realized then that this is a management team that is deeply committed to professional excellence and leading by example…and that is equally true when it’s time to have fun and bond with the team. Whether we’re talking about David’s former semi-pro gaming career, or Lucas’ dream NFT collection, it’s clear that this founding team knows how to have a good laugh and truly make you feel part of the OP family.
My interactions with the rest of the team were just as pleasant. After staying at the Alpha House for nearly a full month, it’s still hard to express just how crypto-native the OP core team really is. Lucas, Mads, and Alex are true degens who have an intimate understanding of complex crypto concepts and the broader Web3 ecosystem as a whole. Calvin is your go-to-guy for keeping up to date with our portco’s and bringing up interesting emerging projects. Meanwhile, Tony is our resident chad who has a wealth of on-chain experience and a charismatic personality that makes him one of the best BD/IR guys you could have.
Once I dived deeper into this spirited company culture, my decision to join this incredible community was already made. As we transition to a more remote working environment in 2023, I’m extremely thankful that I had an opportunity to bond with this incredible team.
Above all, I’m grateful to David, Lucas, and Calvin for their understanding of my schedule as both an international employee in a drastically different time-zone and as a part-time student. Their willingness to be flexible is something I cannot commend enough.
I look forward to helping the OP brand grow into its full potential, and to show the world that this truly is a world-class firm that embodies the ethos of Web3.
