“Those who can’t do, teach. And those who can’t teach, teach gym.”
The simple truth is and good intentions aside, hosting any type of Google+ Hangouts™ On Air can be much like navigating a minefield — as each participant is trepidatiously advancing unknown territory while waiting for their possible misstep to trigger the next massive and devastating explosion (or implosion).
For the first six months of 2014, there has been an exponential growth in small businesses as well as Google Evangelists touting the rise of Google+ Hangouts™ and Google Google+ Hangouts™ On Air as the next step in advancing communication and correlated opportunities for profits on the Semantic web. David Amerland, well known within the Google+ ecosystem, continues to laud praises on Google Hangouts™ On Air and the application thereof to businesses as well as individuals as a columnist for Forbes own NetBrandVoice (NetApp).
It is interesting to note however, that Forbes also was quick to offer an opposing voice — or perhaps a warning. As Google I/O 2014 was underway, that “…as good as [Google] Hangouts is, it really needs to be a lot slicker. A quick look at iMessage in iOS 8 will tell you how it should be done right.” [Source: Forbes Tech, 25 June 2014, http://goo.gl/0oKMcw].
Yet, as the end of June 2014 approaches, the current state of Google+ Hangouts™ and more relevant, Google+ Hangouts™ On Air reminds one of the advent of Cable Access availability. In its earliest days of availability, anybody and everybody could (and often did) “create” a show, for free usually, and maybe 1/10th of 1% were ever any “good enough” to present a value — let alone on option for commercialization and commercial application with a profitable future. The balance however, were haphazard and often failed attempts, filled with nonsensical gibberish, by those who had nothing to do but to display their own “ego-based” motives and superfluity.
One has to ask then, even if sitting silently behind the safe environment of their own computer monitor or mobile device; Just because Google+ Hangouts™ and more appropriately, Google Google+ Hangouts™ On Air, are available to create, they are NOT all “terrific” or worth watching, except as in the case of Cable Access shows — to make fun of.
The Bigger Question
Why doesn't anyone ask for honest feedback about their Google+ Hangouts™ On Air? It seems the standard today is more in alignment with individuals and “like-minded participants and evangelists” will instead they surround themselves with sycophants who say what they want to hear and to amass the largest audience while convincing the same “If you do not watch — you are missing out on a tremendous value!” While there certainly are moments of value — it is not the golden nuggets that many are staking exorbitant amount of time and energy on mining. No — it is bogus bullshit, or perhaps more reminiscent of the California gold rush of 1849, where one would walk away from a twenty hour day with perhaps a few flakes of valued and vaulted dust particles — ON A GOOD DAY.
Technology Advancement Marches On
One thing not dismissed either is the recent news floating around Google+ is that Google+ Hangouts™ “in an instant” (no need to download a plugin) is coming. Wow. Amazing, right? Until one discovers that Appear.in, a tiny start-up incubator team of 9 who been working on products based on the WebRTC capabilities via simple JavaScript APIs since 2012. In fact — anyone can create their own room here http://appear.in (providing an interface which is stable, clean, and fast — launched in August of 2013, and is improving regularly with added features).
What Next Then?
On the heels of Google I/O 2014, there is many things on the near horizon for certain. I might even deduce that Google is stuck in the position of playing catch up with some of their projects, and in all fairness — every single tech giant faces these dilemmas of not only who is the first to market, but who can have a sustainable market for their goods and services.
The same then — Sustainability, must be at least a consideration for the userbase. This means, the users of Google+ Hangouts™, Google+ Hangouts™ On Air, and the Hangouts™ communication platform must improve at producing higher quality, richly engaging, and valuable content. To do this — the userbase has to abandon the current practices of cluttering the bandwidth pipes with mindless drivel, and make use of multiple talents, including; strategic analysis, planning and logistical considerations, an in-depth understanding of the technology (current and coming), become better adept and understanding complexities and nuances of communication, legal issues regarding copyright and as well as the repercussions of infringement, and much, Much, MUCH MORE.
