You need to know a bit about me and my Dad for this article.

The bit about me: I’m a Christian. And I’m gay.

The bit about my Dad: He’s also a Christian. For over forty years he has taken assemblies in primary schools to let children know that Jesus loves them. Every assembly points to one of two parts of scripture:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. — John 3:16

One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” — Matthew 22:35–40

When I first came out to my Dad he wasn’t sure I was gay. He wondered, as many parents do, if it was a phase.

Eventually, he accepted it, but he wasn’t sure it was right for me to find a partner. I found a partner.
