Oh, how I’ve come to hate this virus.

Welcome to one of literal millions of articles about coronavirus! Here’s what makes this one different: It’s self-aware about the madness, and it’s also talking about the impact on the film industry.

In times of crisis, the arts are what people cling to for entertainment and comfort. I’m not gonna pull a 2006 George Clooney Oscar speech here, but sure, it’s nice to see people gathering and appreciating art.

The virus is serious. Let’s put this into perspective: The 1918 “Spanish” Flu had a mortality rate of 10–20%, following weaker waves of the virus, and killed between 50–100 million people, mostly young. The coronavirus is hovering around a mortality rate of 4% in some areas now, and is mostly killing the elderly. To say that coronavirus is being “blown out of proportion” is foolish and makes people not take it seriously, and thus exacerbates the problem. It’s also going to be quite some time before things return to normal, so buckle in for the long haul. Yes, this will go away in time, but there will be a lot of suffering and discomfort along the way. So to ease on that, do your duty: Stay indoors, wash your hands, don’t gather in large groups, and don’t spread false information. Remember: asymptomatic carriers exist, so even if you feel fine, you could spread it to your BFF’s…
