The Importance of Communication in the Workplace

I currently am a server at a small restaurant in my hometown. Although this occupation has many differences from the accounting career I am aiming for, there are still basic and fundamental skills that should be expressed throughout the job in order to achieve success in the workplace.

A major problem I have experienced so far in my time at the restaurant is the lack of effective communication, mainly with the boss. I have asked my co-workers some questions related to ways of improving our communication.
For the most part, communication has been executed between co-workers with ease. We always try to support each other and provide a helping hand during busy service hours. If we have questions, we try to provide the best answer before asking the boss.

A primary issue regarding inefficient communication with the boss is his underlying attitude and lack of respect for his workers. Because of this, as workers, we feel afraid to confront him about issues or any questions we have relating to the job.

In attempts to mitigate this problem and our responses to his out lashes, we have come up with a number of strategies. First and foremost, we cannot let it affect our job. At times, it is very difficult to be resilient after our boss has yelled at us or made a demeaning comment. We want to provide our customers with the best experience so it is very important that we keep this in the front of our minds at all times.

The next strategy involves setting up weekly meetings with the boss and team to discuss expectations for the week. This will give our boss the opportunity to clearly state what our goals are and thoroughly inform us of the specials that we will be presenting to the customers for that week. This also provides him the opportunity to bring up any other outlying issues he believes need to be discussed.

The following graphic provides statistics and evidence to support the importance of effective communication.

The ability to effectively communicate has been and will continue to be a very important skill in the workplace. It is of utmost importance that we recognize any problems or hindrances to communicating with the other members at our workplace and work on resolving the issues and strengthening those relationships.
