Bamboo rice memories
Talk with Dipyas from Dhemaji District, Assam
While in discussions, I realized he had incurred huge loses from stall as the requirement for bamboo items was not as expected despite being the only traditional food stall in namami Brahmaputra festival. People wants to eat more of Chinese, takeaway type of food. Heavy railfall during the event also added to the lose
Later on he talks about, whats happening to-their food in his village.
“We used to cook with bamboo regularly when we were younger, but now slowly roti and similar items have taken the mainstream role in our food.
Due to convenience, now slowly people are adapting to food which are faster and easier to make. The original methods are difficult and slower process compared to new items.
Nowadays we cook with bamboo only during special occasions. Collecting these bamboo for cooking used to be a fun activity when we were kids”
As years passby these kind of methods might exist only in history books if we dont try to reconsider the methods and extracting the better side of it. Maybe we need a modern adaptation of the same without losing its characteristics
