The drainage system of the IVC was very well established and advanced. With a good system of roads, they also have drains created on each side of the road.

These drains were created in scientific patterns and were covered with stone slabs or brick slabs.

Inside the drains, manholes were created which were plastered with GYPSUM (Calcium Sulfate). It helped in filtering the waste and recharging the ground with water.

What does the Drainage system mean in IVC?

This shows that Indus Valley people were very hygienic in nature and care about their health.

This also means that they know what’s good for their health and what’s bad, that’s why they also covered manholes and drains because they know, it’s unhygienic to let them be open.

The drainage system of IVC is also one of the most advanced things which happened in 2600 BCE. This is also one of the reasons why we call the Indus Valley Civilization the most advanced ancient civilization of mankind.

As I have mentioned previously, IVC was divided into sectors, so inside these sectors there were instances of single storey, double storey and triple storey houses.

  • All the houses were made from the burnt brick with the same shape and size. L:B:H = 4:2:1.
  • Inside the houses, bedrooms, courtyard, separate kitchens and separate washrooms were created.
  • All the houses were connected with the main drain for the waste disposal.
  • IVC people were concerned about their privacy, that’s why they didn’t make their houses entrances facing main roads. Because there were no doors or purdah system at that time.
  • IVC people were also good in measurement because of their use of the decimal system.
