Typically, History can be divided into three parts, namely:
- Pre-History: No written record e.g., Stone Age
- Proto-History: Written, but not deciphered e.g., Indus Valley Civilization
- History: This is what we study.
So now a little explanation of every point:
- Pre-history:
— Paleolithic Phase: 500,000 BC to 10,000 BC
— Mesolithic Phase: 10,000 BC to 6,000 BC
— Neolithic Phase: 6,000 BC to 3,000 BC - Proto-History:
— Indus Valley Civilization: 2600 BC to 1800 BC
— Chalcolithic Phase: 1800 BC to 1500BC
— Advent of Aryans: 1500 BC
— Start of Vedic Age: 1500 BC to 600 BC
— Buddhism and Jainism: 6th Century BC
— Rise of Mahajanapadas: 6th Century BC (Important and powerful was Magadha) - History: Well, this is quite a large part, because this is a written and deciphered part, but this can also be divided into many parts, according to religion, land, people, culture, etc.
But the best and secular way to divide Indian History is:
— Ancient History: Haryanka Dynasty (554 BC) to Gupta Age, 7th Century AD
— Medieval History: 7th Century AD to 18th Century AD
— Modern History: 18th Century AD to 1947 AD.
