Improving page links on Notebook.ai

Since the beginning, Notebook.ai has let us link pages together while building worlds. It’s been vital to the experience of keeping each piece interconnected and organized in an otherwise sometimes-unwieldy process.

The old style of linking pages is being phased out.

These links between pages have always been structured and, well, rigid. Characters link to their fathers, daughters, friends, enemies, hometowns, and more. Planets link to countries, countries link to towns, towns link to the characters born or living there, and so on.

This worked well at the beginning, but doesn’t work for everyone. Maybe you want “Fathers” to actually link to a creature, or maybe you just want to add your own link to something entirely different. Our new template editor recently released, but didn’t support creating these “link” kind of fields.

That’s because, as of today, all text-based fields can now also link to any other page. Now, whenever you click on any field, you’ll see it expand with additional space for you to write, but also show a bar of clickable icons for each page you have enabled.

New: link any page from any field.

Simply click on the type of page you want to link to, and then click on the page from the dropdown that you want to link. It’ll automatically insert a code at the end of where you’ve been writing that’ll turn into a link when you view the page.

Links automatically turn into clickable chips when viewing a page.

What about my existing links?

Nothing will happen to your existing links for now. Eventually, they will be automatically converted into a text field and any existing links will be transferred, so your field will look exactly the same without you needing to do anything — but from then on, you’ll also be able to write as little or as much as you’d like about those links, also.

As always, I love to hear questions and comments; I’m always happy to help! You can send me an email at andrew@indentlabs.com or on Twitter at @indentlabs!

So go on then, get worldbuilding! Enjoy! :)
