Events & Community Fundraising Manager, Charlotte Byrne talks us through how Independent Age’s events performed this year, and the different challenges you can sign up for in 2023.

This year, we were delighted to have almost 200 supporters sign up to take on a fundraising challenge for us! Our highlights from the year were the London Marathon and Great North Run, which together raised over £30,000 to help improve the lives of older people. We had a full team of runners taking part in both events, and Independent Age staff were there on the day to cheer them towards the finish line.

We also had runners taking part in events including the Royal Parks Half Marathon, Hackney Half Marathon and the Great South Run. We’re so grateful to everyone that signed up to run for us this year — you’re all superstars!

In 2022, we also launched our first ever Facebook Fundraising Challenge — Walk 65 Miles in October for Independent Age. We had nearly 100 people register for the challenge, most of whom had never heard of Independent Age before, so we were thrilled to introduce the charity to a new audience. We look forward to running more challenges like this next year, and will share them with you all when they’re confirmed.

We also hosted our first ever Skydive Day on 1 October to celebrate International Day of the Older Persons. James told us that the experience of taking part was “awesome” and “not bad for a 73 year old!”.

Next year, we’re excited to have more events on offer than ever before! To name just a few, we’re now accepting places onto popular runs like the Manchester Marathon, Edinburgh Marathon and Cardiff Half Marathon. We also have a shiny new section on our website dedicated to finding the run closest to you.

For the thrill seekers out there, we’ve also launched an Adrenaline section on our website. From bungee jumps to skydives and wing walks, there’s plenty to choose from to get your adrenaline rush and support a wonderful cause.

And last but definitely not least, we’ve also added a host of new walking challenges to our programme. These include the iconic Snowdon, Yorkshire Three Peaks and Ben Nevis. Check out our website to find out more.

We also have the return of our most popular events like London Landmarks Half Marathon, Great North Run and Royal Parks Half Marathon. Places are still available, so sign up today to secure your spot!
