Welcome to the Volunteering Team, Sophia and John
We have recently welcomed two new colleagues, Sophia and John, to Independent Age’s Volunteering Team.
In this blog, John and Sophia take the time to share a bit about themselves and why they decided to come and be part of the team at Independent Age.
Hi! I’m Sophia, I’m from Portsmouth, and I’m the new Volunteer Engagement Assistant at Independent Age. This is my first proper role in the charity sector, so I’m excited to make a start and get to know everyone. Previously, I’d worked in retail for a little bit and in data verification, all while partaking in some volunteering on the side. Eventually, it clicked for me that I’d like to work in a charity full time and I found this role!
Outside of work, I try and take any opportunity I can to do a bit of travelling — even if it’s local and doesn’t involve getting on a plane.
I love to read, and for the second year in a row have set myself an overly ambitious target on GoodReads for how many books I’d like to read this year, which I will definitely be altering to a slightly smaller number come June, when I realise that I was feeling way too enthusiastic in January!
Unfortunately I have seen my phone’s screen time gradually increasing week by week, so I enjoy anything that gets me out and away from screens for a little bit. I’ve started to run more over the past few months, and as I live right by the seafront I can safely say I have one of the best running routes around.
As this is a new role for me I’m definitely looking forward to the contact with our volunteers that it will bring. Throughout all of my work I’ve always enjoyed chatting to new people and finding out their stories and backgrounds, so the opportunity that this role will bring in allowing me to get to know our volunteers and what motivates them is really exciting.
I’m excited to meet more of you over the next few weeks and months!
My name is John Malone and I have recently joined the Volunteering Team at Independent Age where I work as a Volunteer Recruitment Assistant. My new position is focused on providing applicants with an excellent onboarding experience, through training and helping them to complete their application process enabling them to become volunteers at Independent Age.
In my previous role, I worked at a Healthcare Recruitment company as a Compliance Officer and then as a Recruitment Consultant within the Pharmacy team. The main factor that brought me to Independent Age was my desire to make a positive difference to the lives of older people and to work for a charity again, as I have previously volunteered at the British Heart Foundation. In my spare time, I enjoy playing 5 a side football every Tuesday with my friends and going on regular trips to places such as Brighton.
We are delighted to have Sophia and John at Independent Age! If you’re interested in finding out more about the Independent Age Volunteering Team and the volunteering opportunities that we have available, head over to our website and take a look.
