The title of Angie Mangino’s concise historical treatment of a specific locale on Staten Island, New York, is conveniently explanatory: 17th Century Tottenville History Comes Alive, but her subtitle may be more accurate and revealing — Meet the People. Experience the Events. This book is not just a historical account; it’s a journey that resonates with those connected to Staten Island. After all, what this fascinating little book lacks in comprehensiveness makes up for in presence and imagination. The author’s journalistic clarity punctuates her telling of local history with conscientious attention paid to dates and details, both dark and delicious. However, Ms. Mangino provides a decidedly unique addition to her fact-filled recitation of chronological events. Something I’ve not seen before in historical treatments, large or small, are tiny subsections labeled “Imagine.” These are not only appealing but offer a brilliant example of how to engage one’s historical interest. Listen up, you institutions of youthful learning.
