Where has the poetry gone in road signs?

One of the things I love most about traveling in India is the element of surprise — like this road sign on the way to Darjeeling. Expecting the unexpected confounds the logic of the human consciousness.

Why don’t we have signs like this in the U.S.?

They are not only good for speedy drivers, but for my life, too!
