Per-capita GDP of Indian states

After looking at the per-capita GDP of Chinese states in this article, I was interested to see how Indian states fared. It was slightly disappointing to see that India’s per capita GDP is that of the poorest Chinese state, so the picture that evolves isn’t quite surprising.

I was actually trying to figure out how to use this Choropleth example for India’s datasets. But I need co-ordinates(latitudes and longitudes) of the boundaries of all states. It was hard to find such data, so decided to go by the vector map published in this blog post.

Source: I used this wikipedia article for the data plotted in the graph. This is a list of States of India by gross domestic product for the financial year 2010 and the exchange rate used was 47.36 Indian Rupees to 1 USD.

Here is the per-capita GDP of Indian states. The darker the blue, the more the per-capita GDP. Each state is labeled with the name of the country whose per capita GDP is close to the state.

The states are classified into 7 based on their per-capita GDP:
> $2000: Delhi, Goa
$1500 — $2000: Haryana, Maharashtra
$1250 — $1500: Kerala, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Punjab
$1000 — $1250: Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim
$750 — $1000: Mizoram, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, Tripura
$500 — $750: Rajasthan, Orissa, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Assam
< $500: Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Bihar
