Again, inspired by the article on Chinese population, here is a map of Indian states, labelled by the countries closest to their population. This is not a population density map, it compares the total population of every state to a country’s population.

Population growth has been a grave issue for India, until the recent recession where economists claimed that the huge population might have helped India in consuming its produce. Then again, any problem that India faces can be directly attributed to its huge population- be it corruption, inefficient public distribution systems, ever-increasing demand of its crowded cities. These issues can be better comprehended if one gets the relative size of its population. This map is intended to help with that.

Kerala’s population is close to Canada’s, Bihar’s is to Brazil’s. (Brazil is the fifth most populous country in the world.) The population of India at 1210.2 million is almost equal to the combined population of USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangaldesh and Japan all put together. Two of its states(Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra with their combined population of 312 million) exceed the population of USA. Also, India easily can accommodate the population of two Turkeys, two Italys, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Afghanistan, …

Population of Indian states compared with world nations

This map is also created in a way similar to the per-capita GDP map. I’ve again used the vector map available in this blog post. Only the data set has changed. Two Wikipedia articles are the source of this data- i. List of Indian states by population ii. List of countries by population.

Feedback is appreciated!
