Future trends in HCI — Creating leadership roles for Designers ‘behind’ and ‘beyond’ the ‘screen’.
A keynote by Dr. Pradeep Gururaj Yammiyavar
Till the year 2000, the term HCI was almost non existent. It only became known to the people when fresh graduates from the design colleges in later years started working as the creative designers in the field of Computation and Information Communication as Experience Designers. There is a sense of confusion even today about the boundaries between the different arenas of HCI. This confusion often leads a designer into the influence of the ‘screen’.
As practitioners of Interaction Design, we frequently find ourselves in a position where we question the boundaries of technical knowledge that stop us from exploring the depths and practicalities of our concepts. Will our inexperience in the fields of Computer Science and ICT in turn affect our creativity to find solutions to problems?
With advancements in technology, the traditional definitions are being challenged and transformed into suiting the latest trends. ‘HCI’ — ‘Human Computer Interaction’ has evolved this decade into ‘Human Centered Interaction’ and is now trending towards ‘Human Computer Integration’. How will this change our roles as Interaction Designers? Will our jobs be replaced by the over-the-top artificially intelligent bot with more efficiency in work?
Dr. Pradeep Gururaj Yammiyavar is a Senior Professor ( H.A.G) with 30 years Academic experience (1984 to date) working in the area of multi and interdisciplinary Design programs related to Innovation, Management & Technology in multiple roles of Scientist, Researcher, Teacher and Designer of Products, currently working as a Professor of Design Research in the Department of Design — IITG.
This keynote address will attempt to see into the near future by tracing ongoing trends in design research. It will argue for a trans disciplinary approach. It will cite case examples including the emergence of AI, IoT, and Cognitive Science in an attempt to understand what all this means to designers on the threshold of a career in HCI- UI- IxD. Technological advances, as already predicted are redefining boundaries requiring designers themselves to resolve and go behind the screen.
