Water was a film aired in 2005, and it was directed by the Indian director Deepa Mehta. The film talked about how widows struggled in Indian society.

A little girl was married to a dead man and became a widow at the beginning of the film.

She was totally innocent, but her life would be as horrible and hopeless as the rest of the widows in the widow village. Generally speaking, children in films are always a symbol of hope and the future. However, this film put an innocent child into a hopeless environment, which emphasized the critical of how Indian society treated the widows.

Lives in the widow village were hopeless, the only nice thing was a woman called Kalyan. Kalyan was also a widow, however, she was young and gorgeous. She fell in love with a man from the upper class, which led to her death in the end.

A man from the upper class and a widow, the relationship between these two people was totally forbidden in India. The director used lots of candles and medium shots to make the dating scene as beautiful as a dream.

However, the dream would break when we wake up. The pressure was not only from society but also from the rest of the widows from the village. The leader of the widows was furious and cut all of Kalyan’s hair after she heard the relationship between Kalyan and the man.

Through this, we can see that not only males treated females badly in India, but also female themselves can not be united together and save themselves.

Eventually, Kalyan killed herself to end her tragedy life. Kalyan’s suicide made me think, her life could have been much better if she can be braver and fought for herself.
