Book #8 — City of Bones

Theme — A book involving a mythical creature

It has been a while that I updated my reading list thread. It took a few events and couple of breaks, but I am back to reading. I drifted off the path and started an other book, took a break from that one, and took up this book hoping the YA genre will rekindle my reading spark, and boy oh boy was I surprised.

At first, it took awhile to understand all the new characters, shadowhunters, downworlders, the used and abused format of vampires and werewolves and wizards seemed to have a new look. The characters, Jace, Alec, Isabelle and Clary are teenagers born in the elite shadowhunter clan claiming to have half angel blood.

The story reveals itself in the first chapter with Clary’s mother being kidnapped and Clary being plunged into an all new world with new and dangerous inhabitants. And to her rescue arrive, the three shadowhunter siblings, Jace, Alec and Isabelle.

From here the story progresses to reveal the intricacies of this world and its lifestyle to the human world inhabiting Clary. It involves a lot of killing, wizardry, research and general hobnobbing with downworlders. Of course, Clary, our heroine is also joined by her very human best friend Simon. The one boy who cannot tell her about his feelings towards. At the same time must vie for her attentions from the talented, good looking warrior Jace. A typical teenage romance ensues.

Where the book falls flat in its story building, the show does a pretty decent job. When I found my interest in the book waning I was lucky to find the show on Netflix that brought the story to a larger than life form. It definitely kicked the ashes into a roaring blaze. I have to mention a very good looking cast definitely does wonders to a bored reader at times.

What I do have to make a special mention of is diversity in the show. It has different accents, faces and love interests. Without ruining a pretty good plot line for the series, all I can say this was a good read as well as a watch. Waiting to catch the new season on Netflix and the rest of the books once this reading challenge is complete.
