Every present moment is the happiest moment. It is only to be realized. Happiness is already knocking at the door, we just have to open the door and windows of our heart to let it enter. It is already within us; it is waiting at our door, but how to connect with it, how to experience it, and finally how to let it enter our lives.

The simplest and easiest way to feel the happiness within us, and make our-self instantly calm and happy is through conscious breathing. I do not call it meditation because it can be practiced anywhere and anytime, no matter whatever you are doing. It is simply breathing, nothing else but mindful breathing. It makes us aware of the present; it makes all worries go out of our mind and calms us, relaxes us. There is no past, no future but only present awareness. It is a channel, a bridge to connect ourselves to our own inner peace and true nature.

The simplest method of conscious breathing, explained by Thich Nhat Hanh in “Peace is every step” is:

As you breathe in, you say to yourself, “Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.” And as you breathe out, say, “Breathing out, I know that I am
breathing out.” (Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace is every step)

There is no need to say the entire sentence. Only “In” and “out” will do while you breathe in and out. Be completely aware of the process of breathing, feel the movement of your belly — peaceful rising and falling — while you do it. Think nothing else; just enjoy the calming effect of your inhalation and exhalation. But it is impossible not to think. Therefore, think while breathing in that “I am taking in happiness”, and while exhaling think that I am releasing all thoughts of past and future. Simply be aware of your breathing — the calming effect of taking in and giving out happiness.

“Besides the simple “In-Out” exercise, we can recite these four lines silently as we breathe in and out:
Breathing in, I calm my body.
Breathing out, I smile.
Dwelling in the present moment,
I know this is a wonderful moment!” ( by Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace is every step)

Do this simple exercise now. Enjoy your existence; enjoy your present.
