Diamonds and Strawberries

It’s all too beautiful.

There is a rocky planet spinning around one of the stars in the constellation of Cancer that is almost entirely made up of diamonds.

It’s called ‘55 Cancri e’. And it moves at an incredible speed — a year on this planet lasts about 18 hours.

Just think. A 4,000 km diamond. How many carets would that be?

Ever since I found out about this cool new discovery in astronomy, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how amazing it is that this planet is just out there, 230 trillion miles away.

When I look up at the sky, I am sometimes, if I allow myself to be, blown away by the beauty I see. It’s almost like I can’t take it.

Humans usually don’t like being put in their place but when we remember to look up at a clear night sky and see all of those shining stars against an endless carpet of pitch black we get some idea of our true position. Wonderfully reminded in fact.

Yes, we are unique, special and beautiful. And yes, we are dust, small and fragile.

Of all the books in the world that are also described as having real beauty to them, the Bible might not come immediately to many people’s minds, but there are descriptions and truths in there that have a diamond-like ability to dazzle, awe and amaze.

66 books, written by kings, princes, shepherds, priests, slaves and fishermen. Adventure, poetry, songs, history, it covers it all. And it is quite amazingly beautiful. Really. But don’t take my word for it, this is how King David of Israel described it:

“God’s Word is better than a diamond,
better than a diamond set between emeralds.
You’ll like it better than strawberries in Spring,
better than red, ripe strawberries.” Psalm 19 verse 10.

Better than diamonds and strawberries.
