Dreams of Dreaming

I played at naming shadows,
gath’ring more of my mistakes.
I took your show of teeth as smiles,
believing love, in time, would take.
But I was busy kissing nothing,
and of nothing, had my fill, yet,
still — I loved you ever madly
like this fairy-tale was real.
It was a dream,
a scene,
a sliding stream,
a flow of nothing’s what it seems,
a lie, a sigh,
a bit obscene,
a dream of you, a dream of me,
a dream of dreaming dreams to be.
I smiled myself to sleep at night
on waking thoughts of you,
found in dreams of dreaming nonsense,
nothing real, and nothing true.
Now in dreamless sense my senses,
senseless, sensing now my cue
awake from sleep and sigh and put away
the dreams I had of you.
You were a dream,
a scene
that I believed
and nothing is what nothing seems,
I sigh, you lie
there suffering,
your words a silent sentencing,
a dream of dreams we’ll never dream.
