Is Leadership Really About Getting The Midfield Right?

It’s a question I find I’m asking myself more and more and here’s why.

@muddpartnership we believe that real Leadership — Leadership that enables, Leadership that compels, Leadership that crosses the line and delivers — is in fact all about getting the midfield right!

I have already written an elephant’s sufficiency on Leadership: The Art, the multiple Theories, the finite Practice.

Individual, organisational or Business Leadership

However, whether we are talking about Individual Leadership, Organisational or Business Leadership, or leading the Body Politic, I believe it all comes down to these 3 essentials:

  • A robust and engaged Heart
  • An Espirit de corps, &
  • A core coherent and understood Vision.

And it’s all got to be relatable and gifted — Able to transcend and make the complex less complex, the tough stuff not so tough, and the unreachable within reach of All — Or, as the poet, Robert Browning might ask, “What’s a Heaven for if our grasp cannot extend our reach?”.

To my Mind, when the heady brew of Leadership is distilled to what Chaucer might call, “It’s fine and sweet liquor”, it’s about the ability to enable people to achieve things they would never have done without that Leadership.

It’s not about position; being at the Top or out in Front — It’s actually about being at the Centre and being there, come what may.

And it’s about getting that midfield just right — With the right balance of people, having the right skills and being in the right roles — So, they can play the Ball with confidence, clarity, agility, purpose — Moving forward, passing back, striking out, and hitting the target — Knowing the strategy and the tactics; the what to do and the how and when to do it!
