Lesson of the Week: Its all about knowing where to hit!

Last week has been a pretty good week in terms of learning. Though materialistically, I might not have achieved a lot, but have got some good advices for sure!

This week I came across a very interesting video story. I would like to share it with you. This story infact is the lesson of the week. There was once a rich businessman with a broken beloved car. Despite several attempts, he was unable to fix the engine of that car. He called several engineers but no one was able to fix it. Finally there was an old mechanic who visited him. That old guy inspected the engine and asked for a hammer. On front side of the engine, he tapped few times with his hammer and brrroomm…brroom…It started Working! Next day, the old mechanic sent his invoice for $1000. The businessman was shocked.

He said, “ This was merely a $1 job. You just tapped the engine with your hammer. What’s there for $1000 that you are asking?”

The old mechanic said “ Let me give you a detailed invoice.”

The Invoice read:

Tapping the engine with hammer: $1

Knowing where to hit the hammer: $999

That was his experience which made him hit the right spot. Always follow the same.

Its all about knowing where to hit! Everyday I come across my colleagues or friends who complain about their work and that they are underpaid for the amount of work they are doing. Its not about quantity of work but the quality and right work that pays off! It will take sometime to know where to hit and then you will be rewarded for it! Don’t think it is all about number of hours you putting in or don’t complain about your seniors or managers putting in less number of hours. Everyone goes through the same path and it takes a while to build great products! Be patient, be humble and keep up the hard work till you master to find the right spot!
