Mood Ring

I wish the world had a mood ring,
And when it got blue enough,
It would trigger the release
Of a thousand hundred million tiny embraces from the sky.

And each embrace would find a soul that had turned too blue
And latch onto it without permission,
Holding it close, not letting up -
Like the embrace’s little life depended on it.

Until the blue souls
All choked and gasped for air,
The warmth returned to their cheeks,
And they began to float towards the sun.

A beautiful troupe of orangey yellow helium dancers.
Whose newfound lightness
Eclipsed their memories of ever having lingered
So dangerously close to nothingness.
