My first job expectations versus reality
I have always wished to work in an organisation or a company, where i used to picture myself sitting in my own office fully equipped, with friendly colleagues, in an immense building precisely in town, earning a sufficient salary, You know, just like in movies! I guess so many times pictures of wanted things always appear in our heads more clearer, fun and interesting compared to in real life.
I have never got a chance to work in a such environment, most of the companies i used to be working for where mainly focused in event management and I used to be working as a temporary worker doing Ushering, working as a support staff basically not doing a big thing, rather than just standing there welcoming deleguates, distributing water, directing people, printing, Photocopying, etc,… Which i enjoy anyway; being of service. One of the things I enjoyed most, was to see deleguates coming from outside countries with all smiles, leaving the country Happy for the hospitality and service provided to them during their stay in Kigali. Oh, and not forgetting the late night working hours spent, working in Gala dinners, soiree, or cocktails, those were our moments to sit and enjoy countless drinks and food.
Towards the end of last month, I had an opportunity to have a permanent Job. I have 2 bosses! Isn’t that interesting. As I entered the place, I knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy journey. I was lucky to find my friend to whom i was replacing, she started briefing me and after a week she left! I was hoping to have a proper introduction to all the staff, even if I knew some of them. I remembered the conversation i had with my friend i replaced before she left.
Me: I can’t believe you are about to go and no one has ever told me anything this whole week besides passing by me saying Hi and bye.
Her: Well, that’s how it is here, you’ll get used to it within no time.
I started getting used to it, sometimes, I would be called someone else’s name instead of mine. Asking a question would be very hard because they acted like as if i have been working for them forever. I would mess up and learn from my mistakes and turn the page like nothing ever happened. Oh, and few days later I signed the contract as an Administration Offcer and realised I was key to the organization. I ended up getting used to this new environment and working without complaining because i knew that this was just the beginning of an unexpected experience that will lead me to something better.
