A personal exploration of the crucifix and its spiritual symbolism

We live in a culture that continually commodifies and sells us the experience of comfort and luxury. Whether it be our technology, leisure or psychological and spiritual practices, most promise us the possibility of a ‘happier’ life. Yet so often the reality of our daily lives is one that entails a certain amount of hardship, frustration and set-back. I can’t help but think that the expectation of an easier and less difficult life leads to a lot of emotional turmoil and dissatisfaction when we are confronted with the harsh and sometimes unrelenting realities of existence.

The images that shine out from social media, all smiles, margaritas and six packs fail us when we are most in need. I believe that what we so lack in our current age are the philosophies and beliefs that give meaning to our struggles. That allow us to create a transcendental process from our hardest moments and provide the mythology for growth in darkness. This is why, for me, the cross is such a meaningful symbol.

The cross pre-Christ

The Cross is an ancient pre-Christian symbol that transcends culture and religion. Found as far back as the mesolithic period in ancient cave art, it seems to have held profound significance throughout human history.
