When the Los Angeles Times released its guide to voters of California’s 30th Congressional District (the seat formerly held by Rep. Adam Schiff on 1 February 2024, one detail was strikingly absent. There was no reference to the candidates’ positions regarding Israel’s US-funded war on Gaza.

Two weeks later, the Los Angeles Daily News published another feature that claimed to cover all the candidates’ positions in detail. This time, the reporter claimed that the task facing every candidate was “how to stand out in a field of largely like-minded, highly qualified competitors.” In a race in which only two candidates have publicly come out in favor of a ceasefire, the description of them all as “largely like-minded” is seriously misleading.

Political Parties & the Political Establishment

Even putatively leftist political parties are contributing to this misinformation. The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has for example endorsed an establishment politician, Laura Friedman, who does not support a ceasefire in Gaza.
