On March 17, the 23-year-old was found blindfolded on her bed, with her hands bound at the back and her mouth covered with tape at her Lenasia Extension 3 Nasturtium Avenue home.

She had also sustained two bullet wounds to the head and was declared dead on the scene. There was no sign of forced entry and only the TV which was in her room and her father’s firearm was missing.

“On Monday, April 25, Lenasia SAPS together with Durban detectives, through investigation, were able to arrest the suspects,” said Captain Hector Netshivhodza.

Three suspects, two women and a man aged between 25 and 49, were nabbed in Alberton.The three arrested for the murder of Jaishika Amtha appeared in court on Thursday, April 28.

“She was the only child and had also begun studying for her Master’s Degree this year,” said a friend.

Relative Umesh Morar, who in an earlier interview described the killing as “merciless”, said he was surprised at the arrests as police had not yet informed the family. “But it is shocking that two females are arrested,” he said.

Morar said a month after Amtha’s death her family were still devastated. “They are traumatised.”
Amtha would have formally graduated with her degree in pharmacy from the University of Witwatersrand this month.

She had also secured a scholarship to pursue her master’s degree. Her murder had outraged her community, with locals taking to social media to say criminals had all the freedom but citizens lived in fear.
