Brave Care: Digital Efficiencies

Creating the Foundation for a Better Care Model

At Indicator, our relentless pursuit of digital efficiencies is increasingly leading us to opportunities in digital health. This trend may be because of the enormously cumbersome regulatory hurdles (and the opportunities that presents) or the fact that healthcare is the largest addressable market in the world and therefore attracts brilliant entrepreneurs and problem solvers. The unfortunate reality is that foundational, policy-level change is required to change things like the fact that nearly 25% of insurance premium dollars, more than any other line item, goes toward prescription drugs. However, there are huge and immediate opportunities for technology-enabled solutions to reduce administrative waste (time and money) and shift much of that savings to quality patient care experiences, and that’s exactly what Brave Care is doing.

Brave Care is on a mission to provide the best and most convenient (non-life threatening) pediatric care to patients at a fraction of the cost. That mission was further advanced by Brave Care’s recently released suite of custom-built software.

Brave Care believes a family’s care journey extends beyond the walls of the clinic. It’s not just about the patient-provider interaction, but also scheduling an appointment, checking in, receiving care, and the administrative details like prescriptions and payments. In other words, every single little touchpoint matters when you’re as obsessed with delivering the level of quality experience Brave Care is creating for its patients and their families.

On the patient side, they’ve accounted for tools to address efficiency in both scheduling and check-in. With the new online scheduling tool, parents can make a same-day appointment in just a few easy steps. They can register multiple kids and add other parents or caretakers with permission to book appointments for their children. Scheduling online creates an account for the family, so future bookings are even faster.

Once families arrive at the clinic, they can register on iPads with newly released check-in features to save time. For example, they can easily upload photographs of their photo ID and insurance information, as well as payment method for copays. Best of all, they’ll only complete these tasks once (unless their payment method or insurance changes).

On the administrative side, off the shelf software that Brave Care has previously tried caused friction and frustration. It required the team to toggle between three systems, which was slow, clunky, and redundant. Following an in-depth study of existing systems, Brave Care built a custom, all-encompassing platform that’s intuitive and removes redundancies, while also making it easier to share information with patients’ other care providers (a critical component of maintaining accurate health records).

Inevitably, these tools all help to serve one purpose: drive more efficient operations that result in a better patient experience either through patient’s interaction with the clinic or indirectly by ensuring that clinic staff spends less time with administrative tasks and more time focusing on delivering an exceptional care experience. This is a big deal.

While this is a major step for Brave Care it’s just the beginning of the foundation to build a better care model — and their new system is already unlocking new possibilities. For example, they expect to be able to leverage data in the system to better predict costs for families in the near future. The system will also help Brave Care create more comprehensive health records for patients and in turn, provide more comprehensive care.

*COVID-19 Update — After the global pandemic took a turn for the worst, Brave Care made an increased effort to spin up their Telehealth product, ‘Virtual Care for Kids,’ as well as a COVID-19 guide and symptom checker. Families can now receive medical treatment and advice for their children from the comfort of their own home, as Brave Care connects them to members of their certified Care Team (comprised of Physicians, Medical Assistants, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners). It is important to note that Brave Care accepts insurance from most major providers, and has affordable prices for those who are uninsured. The service is now live in 12 states, with more to come. In addition to online care, Brave Care is also offering in-car COVID-19 tests to children, having already tested hundreds of kids to-date. These are just a few examples of how Brave Care is edging closer to their goal of providing exceptional care to kids.
