Welcome to a new blog series! Each week, I will do a quick writeup of the top song from the subreddit /r/indiemusicfeedback, which feeds our community here at IMF.

The song will be chosen based on the number of upvotes in a given Friday to Friday window. This first time around, it is fitting that we are featuring Tomer Krail’s latest single. Tomer is a well-known artist in IMF circles, and was awarded the Song of the Year in the 2019 IMF Grammies — a community led effort by Pax Libertas to recognize the amazing music flowing from our artist collective.

Digging into this track, it’s nice to see Tomer flexing his range. Indie Lo-Fi is a proper genre now, with a sound that reminds me a little bit of 90’s trip hop mixed with 2000s indie rock. For example, I hear Massive Attack and Portishead influences within the rhythm section of Further To Sink. There is also a classic rock tone that I can hear in this song, but is more apparent in Tomer’s other songs. Steely Dan style jazz-rock licks help to underpin a strong vocal melody. And then there’s the lyrics.

The lyrics remind me a little of the famous Shackleton journey that ended in disaster with a heroic rescue effort. My favorite line was “And now it’s down to the whale bones / At the bottom of everything.”

Do yourself a favor. Next time you are in the mood to relax with a nice adult beverage, turn the lights down low and chill out with Tomer’s full discography on any of the major music services. You won’t be disappointed.

On a sea of bad decisions
The waves are getting rough
But still the party moves on
Toward the harder stuff

As the wind picks up
Everybody’s getting sick
And the captain screams aloud
“We’re going down quick”
We’re going down quick

So your friends fill the lifeboats
Your lover takes the rubber ring
The captain takes his own life
You say “I can’t even swim”
And now it’s down to the whale bones
At the bottom of everything

As the wind picks up
Everybody’s on the brink
Neptune screams “hey my son”
“You’ve still got further to sink”
Still got further to sink
