According to WTVC News Channel 9, The Bessie Smith Story is a sell out at the Tivoli in downtown Chattanooga. HBO is also showing it. Nicknamed The Empress of the Blues, Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s They couldn’t have picked a better person than Queen Latifah to play Bessie Smith. She has the Bessie Smith look, and there might have been some parts of Bessie Smith’s life that Latifah could relate to. That makes acting even better.

The movie is talked about all over the internet. It is a winner of course because of those who knew Bessie, and because of those that are trying to find out by watching the movie. Queen Latifah makes it look like a great story. So for those of us that don’t know who Bessie Smith is, we know now. I didn’t know that I knew a little bit about Bessie Smith. I have been hearing her songs and did not know that it was her. I have seen her pictures but could not put it all together because I really didn’t know Bessie Smith.
