Yuma Taru / Atayal people / Taiwan b.1963

Amongst Taiwan indigenous artists, Yuma is a cultural preserver of national designated vital traditional crafts. Being born in the area of “Ilyung Penux,” Da’an river, in central Taiwan, she has been dedicated to studying, analyzing, and remaking Atayal traditional woven clothes and carried on diverse experiments and practices in tribal society.

She extracts nutrients from the spirit of Atayal ethnic philosophy in her profound cultural learning experiences and transforms them in ways of artistic creations and connotations. Furthermore, she attempts to apply different modern materials in her art. To sum up, she is a fiber artistic creator upholding an ethnic-cultural mission.
