Hi, and Welcome to Indispensable!

We’re new non-profit organization, focused on bringing stories about our common values — equality of opportunity, freedom of expression — home to the United States from around the world.

With isolationism on the rise thanks to Donald Trump’s America First nationalism, we have to take up the fight to show others all the good that our country does around the world. When America stands up for issues human rights, free elections, and economic assistance, it’s not only because they’re morally right, but they’re strategically sound too. A freer, more democratic world is simply a more peaceful and prosperous one.

We’ve taken the last few months to set up Indispensable, and I couldn’t be more excited to announce that we’re off to start our first project.

During the first week of March, we’re off to Tunisia to film a short documentary about the state of democracy in Tunisia following the Arab Spring.

Starting in early 2011, dictators across the Middle East were thrown out by protesting masses, who’d grown sick of living under dictators. The revolutions were sparked when Mohammed Bouzizi — a fruit seller from southern Tunisia — lit himself on fire to protest unemployment.

2018 Protests in Tunisia

Seven years later, dictators came back to hold power across the region, but Tunisia has much to be proud of: They’ve written a new Constitution, won the Nobel Prize for it, and have held free and fair elections. But after a series of terrorist attacks in 2015, the economy tanked and protesters are on the march again.

We’re going to Tunisia to ask where the country is headed next, and to show that there are lots of people in the Arab world who are willing to fight for the same democratic values we enjoy here at home.

We hope you’ll join us. It’s time we start talking about the values that have made our country the indispensable nation in world affairs… because when we embrace that role, good things happen.

Please check out our website at www.indispensableus.org, and follow this page. We’ll continue to populate it with critical stories about America’s role in the world and our forthcoming plans.

Thanks,

Jim
