Initial thoughts
Wow, so I have finally arrived here in Jakarta, Indonesia. Well, where exactly do I start? Oh btw, the ANA Japanese airline I took to get here was probably the best airplane of all time. I could explain it here or you could get on a plane to Japan. Much easier.
Anyways, the humidity here is much like the east coast. Sticky, overpowering, unenjoyable, but for some odd reason, you quickly adjust to it.
Since I didn’t have to start work for 2 days when I first arrived, all I did was go out to some of the sketch hole in the wall food joints and eat. I spent nearly $50 in food the first day I was here. You’re sitting there and thinking, that’s not a lot but what you don’t know is that food is here is much cheaper. Let’s take fast food for example. You go to Mcdonald’s and order a normal medium sized meal. I’m estimating that costs around 8 dollars but here you get all that for 3–4. Does that put things into perspective? No? Well then..
On a different note, every highway has sidewalks. Like literally, EVERY single highway has a sidewalk. I have to constantly be looking both ways or else a car is going to thrust me into oblivion. If you didn’t already know, people drive on the left side of the road so the driver’s seat is on the right side of the car. For some odd not so odd reason, motorcycles are IN. Motorcycles are a thousand times more common than cars. Also, the concept of lanes is all screwed up here. People go both ways on highways and honestly it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.
I am running a blank here…. Hold up….
ahhh got it. ok so there seems to be a bunch of misplaced buildings. Like I could be walking through a rather poor neighborhood but out of nowhere there is the biggest nicest house that could probably be seen somewhere on 17 Mile Drive. (Pebble Beach, California) There are a ton of these but they aren’t all placed together like their own rich neighborhood, no. They are pretty much dropped in randomly like some higher figure playing darts with Jakarta as his board. It can be quite confusing. I will say though, down the block from where I work, lives the 15th richest man in Jakarta.
