Why the Knicks being slightly good is not good

1st Quarter

I’m watching the Knicks/Rockets game and listening to the sweet sounds of Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy hyperbolize Porzingis’ mutant ability to shoot over the top of defenders. We really do have a unicorn. After a couple of ugly losses to start the season the Knickerbockers have won 3 straight and most importantly seem to be playing somewhat competent basketball. Coach Horny has this team actually trying on defense. Kyle O’Quinn is a blue-collar, roll up your sleeves and get shit done big man that resonates well with the Knicks faithful. The French Prince is only the second youngest player in the NBA and looks like he could be a strong PG in a couple of years. The effort is there. And that usually translates to some wins….that’s good, right?….WRONG!

2nd Quarter

Sorry, but it’s Game 7 of the World Series. Gotta watch a couple innings.

3rd Quarter

And, the wheels have come off. Kanter gets burned on D. Ryan Anderson seems to be open on every possession. This game is over.

4th Quarter

Wow, this 4th quarter has me (and hopefully all logical Knicks fans) fired up. The defense and effort from Dotson & Ntilikina is very encouraging. I’m especially pleased with Dotson’s jump shot. Very fluid motion. He looks to be a possible 2nd round steal.

But the final score is what has me most satisfied. I’m not interested in wins. Winning 30 games this year translates to pick #10 in the draft. That would be a travesty. In a monster, front-loaded draft class (Bagley III, Doncic, Ayton, Porter Jr., etc.) missing out on one of those top 5 prospects just for a couple extra wins this year is nearsighted. Just look at the Astros. They’re minutes away from winning the World Series. You know how they built this juggernaut team? By losing games. This article sums it up nicely:

So bring on the losses. Bring on the player development. Keep KP happy. And let’s say a prayer that JD sticks with the blues.
