In the wake of the death of 13 children on April 26, 2018, when a train rammed into a school van carrying children, in Uttar Pradesh, Indian Railways gave a statement saying, it will eliminate all unmanned level-crossings (UMLCs) by March 31, 2020.

Ashwin Lohani, Railway Board Chairman also gave a statement cautioning citizens to be careful while crossing tracks till the Unmanned Level crossings (UMLCs) are eliminated.

According to a recent report by Rail Analysis, for the year 2017–2018 a total of 3478 unmanned Level Crossing gates have been eliminated. The Report claims, all unmanned level crossings on broad gauge have been eliminated except one that is due in the year 2019. Out of 16 zonal railways, 15 are already free of unmanned level crossings.

Railways have put in relentless efforts, due to which there has been a constant decrease in the number of unmanned level crossings accidents. In 2016–17, 20 percent of total railways accidents were reported as Unmanned Railway Crossing (UMLCs) accidents. The number was decreased to 7 percent for the year 2018–19. There has also been a constant downfall in the total railway accidents, from a total of 104 to 44 for the same time period. Watch the full video here.

Indshine, a Gurgaon based startup which provides a cloud based Geo-spatial analytics platform and enterprise drone solutions have successfully conducted drone surveys for Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Limited (MRIDL), a joint venture between Government and ministry of railways that aims to provide a boost to rail infrastructure projects in Maharashtra.

In its latest project for MRIDL, Indshine conducted a drone survey for efficient planning to eliminate a total of 23 level crossings in Maharashtra and replace them with Road Over Bridges (ROBs).

Drones have been helping Indian railways by conducting aerial surveys for site inspection, proposing alignment for new railway tracks, doubling of the already existing railway line, also helping in cost analysis and monitoring the construction progress.
