Objective

The objective was to conduct a UAS- Drone Technology based aerial survey to construct a 3rd railway line from Bina to Katni Railway station, with a distance of 263 Km.

OVERVIEW

Indian Railways has taken the major initiative to invest heavily in its infrastructure development. It has been proposed that monetization of land will be allocated for commercial development and for station redevelopment. Doubling of tracks is part of the initiative which aims at reducing congestion and train delays, at the same time focusing on safety measures. For the year 2018–19, doubling of broad gauge conversion was approved for 18,000 km.

PROBLEMS faced by Indian Railways

Doubling of Railway tracks brings on many challenges, which includes:

  1. Land Acquisition: For Doubling of rail tracks, new land is acquired from landowners. Since the process of conducting landscape inspection and moving inhabitants to a new place is a lengthy and time taking process, therefore, it also is the sole reason for the delay in execution of projects.
  2. High construction cost: High construction cost is incurred in doubling of tracks as it involves land acquisition and Earthwork cost (Leveling cost). In this particular project, it was difficult to inspect the terrain as it included rivers, barren land, forest, and hilly region which made it difficult to conduct the survey.
  3. Mapping of large-scale linear corridor section of (263x2 Km) was yet another difficulty faced by Indian Railways in this project.
  4. Digitization: Indian Railways has been dealing with land records and other data in the form of paper documents. To enable collaboration and providing future perspective to the collected data it is needed to digitize it.

INDSHINE’S SOLUTION

Using a quadcopter drone we to capture the entire 263 km, which produced a total of 17,200 high-resolution images. We used Smart Batching/clustering techniques to process a limited number of images per project at once. And generate a seamless Orthomosaic in which the Whole section is divided into 54 parts of 5 Km each. This makes it available in CAD also. We provided processed videos of the site.

DELIVERABLE

  1. High-resolution map (orthomosaic) of total 265x2 = 530 Km in length with the 120m right of way covered. Orthomosaic can also be used to generate yard plans, used for asset management etc. No extra fieldwork is required for the same. So, Orthomosaic will act as a single data that can potentially serve multiple purposes.
  2. The orthomosaic was provided via Indshine’s cloud platform, where all the stakeholders’ infrastructure development can visualize, collaborate and make an informed decision from anywhere and any point in time.
  3. We also provided processed videos of the site.
