Earth-Prayer
Poem
O cold and indifferent heavens,
Is not earth Thy daughter in distress?
O Gods of the radiant ether,
Swift and miraculous on thy planes higher,
Thy unwilling presence on her abandoned breast
Reeks of thy broken meed, a sign thy hearts closed.
O heroes of mid-earth, heaven-bordering,
Art not thou duty-bound to her, thy mother in suffering?
O men of her living brood, consumers of her plenty,
Art thou mere witnesses to her untold misery?
O Divine Master, in Thee alone is her glorious awakening,
Because she is Thy daughter, loving and sweetly dumb.
