Have I ever brought Thee faded ardour,
Fires with meagre shrivelled limbs
Wasted by passing storms and fever
That upon the weak-willed descends?

Have I ever brought Thee pale verses,
Words borrowed from lips of men
Like worn out coins of lay commerce
Whose value is by mere convention?

Have I ever brought Thee dull speech,
Ever lit my tongue with lesser flame
For Thy light to each listener reach
And unfurl in word-sound Thy hallowed name?

Because I bring Thee ever rare fervour
Dost Thou deem me familiar and plain O divine Paramour?
