So We Decided To Create Our Own

Left: portrait of a woman and man office workers with arm crossed isolated on white background (seriously, that’s the title). Right: awesome colleagues re-creating a stock photo in under twenty minutes. It proves you can save money, have fun and create original content at the same time.

Let’s be honest, the world of stock photos is the world we all want to live in.

It promises something better, something beautiful. It’s somewhere where everyone has white teeth and a wide smile, your friendship circle is a rainbow of ethnic diversity, and with a quick green screen adjustment you can transport yourself from a hip downtown startup to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Left: bearded man wearing virtual reality goggles in modern coworking studio. Smartphone using with VR headset. Horizontal, blurred. Right: resident cool beard-wearing developer Eddy picking up VR goggles while spontaneously looking up. Horizontal, semi-blurred. Nailed it in one shot.

But life is imperfect. And while we’d all love to be chilling with Harold on his beige sofa, we also understand it’s important for photos to be an accurate representation of the thing they’re trying to portray.

Left: business people meeting conference discussion corporate concept. Right: thoughtfully composed selection of colleagues effortlessly impersonating stock meeting. Check out the meticulous styling and perfectly executed hand gestures.

Businesses have been binging on stock photo sites for so long that there isn’t a shred of originality left. And there’s something else, too. Stock photos can be really expensive. You can pay up to €500 for one of the ‘better’ ones, and even they look fake. There are some nice free alternatives, but you are not the only one who has discovered. There’s only one way to ensure that your visual style is one-of-a-kind: create your own.

Left: casual cheerful girl alone outdoor recreation concept. Right: casual colleague being cheerful despite blistering cold.

So now we have our own stock portfolio.

Okay, our teeth might be a little crooked, our shirts could do with an iron and we had to bring in the espresso cups from home. But we can stare at a computer monitor looking important as well as the next person. And we saved €500 doing it. Apart from that the photo-shoots were great fun. So, if you want to create real, authentic, original material while simultaneously bringing your colleagues closer together: use your (stock) photography budget to buy a decent compact camera and you’re good to go.

Left: startup business people group working as team to find solution to problem. Right: real people working as a team by looking at a screen together in a rather serious manner.

Thanks to all our fabulous models (who can now quit their day job to start a fruitful stock-modelling career) Krishna, Akshara, Suraj, Tijo, Eddy, Isabelle, Kimbell, Rik, Jeroen, Youssef, Lennart, Birgit, Jolien, Johan, Edwin & Alberto.

There is a place where these magnificent creatures roam free. Curious? Find out more about their everyday life over here.
