Connecting Community Back with Business | Amy Lewis and Matt Broberg of The Geek Whisperers — EP018

The co-hosts of the Geek Whisperers podcast reunite to talk on the state of the influence marketing and give some tips for companies big and small

--

Today we are talking with Amy Lewis and Matt Broberg, who along with John were the co-hosts of The Geek Whisperers podcast that came to a close at Episode 140 in October 2017. It was great to reconnect on the mic and have a laugh with Amy and Matt, but we also wanted to talk about their roles in influence marketing and what they are up to now.

We talked about building a community at a startup, creating great content with a low budget, how their roles fit in across departments within their company, some highlights of the now retired Geek Whisperer podcast, and what projects we can look forward to from them both in the coming months!

Main Points

  • The famous three-circle model of Influence Marketing: People, Platforms, and Content.
  • The size of your event matters less than the attendees and your ability to create content with them.
  • You have to be aligned with one of the big three: sales, engineering or marketing.
  • Creating content with little-to-no budget is still possible when you focus on elevating the experts and contributing as much as you can to the community.
  • Title yourself appropriately and handle yourself with the gravitas to push back when you feel as though the title and role aren’t taken seriously enough.
  • The Geek Whisperers podcast was fun and gave us a great outlet but took a lot of time and effort to produce, hence retiring it for the time being before it completely jumped the shark.
  • Career paths are changing in the way of no longer being completely linear. People can craft a position to be along the lines of what they really desire.
