Two weeks ago, we hosted a webinar about Social Media Trends in 2018 (check it out if you haven’t seen it yet). We talked about trends for 2018 and covered social media algorithms which every social media coordinator should follow. We have received many requests for a summary of everything covered in the webinar. We created a short-list of what to do to grow organically on Instagram. Here’re 5 main tips:

1. Make people engage with your posts. It’s like in real life — would you like to talk to a person who’s very popular among other people? Same for Social media. Facebook and Instagram both know who is popular, and show these users more often to you. When viewers interact with your content, it increases your engagement. Engagement is a very important part of your Instagram strategy because it shows how active and popular your account is. Engagement is a percentage measure of likes, comments, and reposts. High engagement is very important for your posts. “Getting Likes” is good, but aim for “comments”. It takes more time to leave them, and “comments” weigh more than “likes”. One more thing you should also consider — Instagram might take into consideration the speed of engagement. Two posts with the same amount of likes and comments can show up in a newsfeed differently. The one with the faster-collected engagement will appear more often when your followers scroll through Instagram photos. There’s always a way to advertise and boost (or, in other words, make it appear more often) your posts artificially. It definitely works, but you’ll be charged for it. However, if you choose the right social media strategy you can easily boost your profile without paying for it.

2. Care about relationships. Did you notice that sometimes you see your friend with ten followers’ post more often than posts from Selena Gomez? That might look weird, but not if you like or comment on every one of your friend’s posts. If you engage a lot with a particular profile, Instagram will consider it to be interesting you. As a result — you get your most liked profiles’ posts ahead of all others.

3. Don’t make people skip your post — make them stop on it. Time matters here as well. If your followers scroll over your post, it might not count as even a tiny bit of engagement. Once someone stops on your post: regardless of whether they are reading the text below the picture or are enjoying the stunning photo, it will increase chances for your post to appear more often. This is Instagram’s way of giving you bonus boost points. That is why we recommend using carousels, boomerangs, and videos.

4. Choose the right time. You’ll hardly ever get quick engagement if you post while all your followers are sleeping. Choosing the right time might make people respond faster to your content (don’t forget — speed matters). Hootsuite says the best time to post on Instagram is from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. (Here and further, consider time zone of your most engaged followers) [1] This is during lunch time, when people tend to scroll through their Instagram more often. On the other hand, Boston-based marketing agency Mavrck analyzed 1.3 billion Instagram posts and found that people post the least from 6 am to 12 pm. [2] As a result — a different piece of advice was given: post while no one else is posting (sometimes it’s good to be the only one who posts). It’s up to you what strategy to choose. You can try both and select which works better for you.

5. Let them share. You cannot track when your post is shared in a direct message, but seems like Instagram can. The more people share your post, whether they repost it or send it via direct message, the more popular it is. Grab people’s attention by writing interesting captions and uploading high quality pictures. Remember, most of the influencers use professional photographers to retain their followers, so do your best to keep up to those standards if you want to see the same results.

These 5 tips will help you boost your posts and make your Instagram profile more relevant and popular. Be thoughtful about your content and pictures, use appropriate hashtags, post whatever makes you passionate, and your engagement rate will grow, as will the number of your followers.
