Meet Mattie Newlin, an up and coming filmmaker and influencer based in New York.

Mattie’s work “The Distant Vicinity” won a spot in an indie film festival earlier this year and we instantly connected over her art. We were lucky to grab her for an interview and learn more about her as a creator, influencer and filmmaker.

You’re a filmmaker and an influencer. How and when did you first discovered that you wanted to create content and publish it out there for the world to see?

Mattie: In 2011, I discovered Michelle Phan, who is a beauty guru and would post these creative videos impressive looks, and I was really inspired. I also discovered the Youtuber NigaHiga, who would post comedy videos and I was also inspired by that. I started making my own comedy and beauty videos on youtube and taught myself how to use iMovie.

How do you think being in the East Coast adds to your advantage as a creator?

Mattie: In New York City, there’s a lot of interesting and beautiful places to film and a lot of opportunities. Plus, there’s a lot of museums and Broadway shows as well as film festivals. You get exposed to a lot of that here in the city.

What words of wisdom would you give to aspiring creators/artists/influencers? And what was the hardest lesson you’ve learned since you’ve started?

Mattie: Don’t be ashamed of what you want to teach others. If you have a passion in something, do it because if you don’t, you’ll never reach your goal. It’s important to try new things and be willing to fail. Negative comments on your work are irrelevant if they aren’t constructive criticism. Just think that they probably couldn’t do what you’re doing.

Let’s talk technical: what kind of equipment are you using for your pictures and what post edit platforms are you using (P.S. Can I say how much I love that you have a consistent color palette across all of your shots)?

Mattie: I use the Canon Rebel t5i camera, and I use iMovie to edit my films. (and thank you!!) The platform is Youtube.
