Chief Navigator, Lea Cobden-Edwards
“In charge of all navigation aboard the Arvad, ensuring course, direction, fuel consumption, and systems that assist with mapping the stars”

Chief Navigator Cobden-Edwards is the kind of person you’d want steering a kilometer-long ship with you and eleven thousand of your family, friends, and neighbors. A classic “measure thrice, cut once” type, she never does anything impulsively or carelessly, at least while on duty. A mathematical prodigy, she was drawn to physics early in life, and that love of pure and practical math has been her compass ever since. Without her, we would literally be lost.
Off duty, Lea has a soft spot for improvisational jazz; the combination of rules and unpredictability is comforting to her. She has an extensive collection of jazz recordings dating all the way back to historical ones from Earth and has added to this fonds with hundreds of hours of her own performances and compositions under the solo artist name Astrolabe. She plays alto saxophone, piano, and upright bass masterfully, and quite a few other instruments passably.
The youngest of the department heads, Lea is the recent replacement for the former Chief Navigator, who was prevented from guiding the Arvad to her destination by failing health. Since there won’t be a need for an astronavigator after Arrival, this promises to be a short but intensely interesting appointment for the young Navigator.
