Dr. Susan Blackwell, Chief Medical Officer
“The Chief Medical Officer’s primary objective is to keep everyone on board healthy. In a relatively small population, within a sealed vessel, with no outside assistance for millions of kilometers, it is vital that as many people as possible are active and well enough to be able to perform their duties.”

Low population, limited genetic diversity, and the extreme remoteness of the tiny society aboard the Arvad are the primary challenges that worry Chief Medical Officer Susan Blackwell. Doctors tend to value human life quite highly and fight against mortality fiercely, but this drive borders on an obsession for her. Formerly an oncologist before taking the top job in the Medical Department, she often jokes that she traded a game of tic-tac-toe with Death for a chess match against Death instead.
While she is about as likely to sleep in a spare room at her hospital as she is to sleep in her own bed in her private quarters, when her staff are able to successfully send her home, a much calmer and less stressed Susan emerges from under her normal curt professionalism.
Her favorite way of unwinding is drinking warm herbal tea and watching ancient romantic comedies. Susan has watched every different adaptation of Pride and Prejudice stored in the Arvad’s extensive media library. She also has several hobbies that all reward intense focus and patience, including painting spacescapes, sewing elaborate cross-stitch pieces, and solving jigsaw puzzles.
